New York City, the consummate metropolis, glistens by night, comes alive with winter tourism...
NEW YORK TRANSIT STRIKE FREEZES CITY FOR 3RD DAY
22 December 2005

As New York City's public transport strike reached the end of its second day, it became clear the city was facing a difficult crisis. Reports began to mount of strangers helping strangers, sharing cars for rides into the city, and cab drivers were forced to reorganize their service to accommodate multiple fares simultaneously. Mayor has sought to depict strike as "illegal" but reports now suggest the strike may end today. [Full Story]

NEW YORK: CITY FOR ALL SEASONS
Updated 22 December 2005

Known famously as "the city that never sleeps", New York City grew over the 19th and 20th centuries into the consummate cosmopolitan metropolis. One of the world's most diverse urban environments, more than half of its residents speak a language other than English in their homes, and it boasts one of the world's most vibrant cultural economies.

In summer, Central Park can be an idyllic diversion from the heat, where visitors go boating, picnic or stumble on musical and theatrical performances.

The city of New York spends more money funding the arts than any other institution of government in the US. Its Metropolitan Opera House at Lincoln Center, its Metropolitan Museum of Art, on 5th Avenue in Central Park, and the Museum of Modern Art in Midtown Manhattan, are among the world's best in their areas.

New York is also the financial capital of the United States, set up deliberately to serve as such in keeping with the plans of one of the nation's founders, Alexander Hamilton, intended as a counterbalance to political power based in Washington, DC.

The city quickly recovered its economic footing after the attacks of 11 September 2001, and is on its way to rebuilding the site where the famed Twin Towers fell.

In winter, tourism flourishes, as visitors seek the entertainments of its Broadway and classical music, its ice-skating rinks and the lavish Christmas decorations of Rockefeller Center. In summer, Central Park is an expansive patch of green where residents take in theatre, music, upscale eateries or the sun and shade provided by its open spaces and concentration of treecover.
