ARGENTINA CALLED ON TO INVESTIGATE ATTACKS ON JOURNALISTS
29 June 2004

Amnesty International says the government of Argentina needs to investigate threats of violence against journalists during the period of economic collapse, up through present day investigations into past abuses of police and military forces. The AI report cites ongoing examples of constraints to freedom of expression, either condoned or not contested by government officials, saying:

In this context, the country's media has played an important role in reporting on state repression by informing the population about issues that affect their human rights. Many Argentine journalists have seen their own human rights compromised as they have carried out their legitimate work, being frequently subject to physical attacks, intimidation and threats against their physical integrity, by members of the police or unidentified individuals.

The Asociación en Defensa del Periodismo Independiente - PERIODISTAS) reported in 2002 that attacks against journalists in Argentina were 15 percent more frequent than during 2001, a worrying escalation in so short a time. It is these reports of violence and harassment, that should be investigated, according to the report.

IFEX reports that the Argentinian Senate is even considering legislation that would jail individuals or organizations who broadcast "illegally" or independently of government supervision. Reporters Sans Frontières reports that the bill was intended only to prevent unauthorized radio signals from interfering with the traffic control system at the Buenos Aires airport.

Various human rights organizations have traced the parallel evolution of attacks on the press and constraints on the liberty of citizens, increasing likelihood of political corruption or authoritarian abuses, in countries around the globe. The Committee to Protect Journalists keep a regular record of government or private abuses of members of the press around the world. [For more: AI Press Release]
