VATICAN CONSIDERS GM CROPS
12 November 2003 African priests criticized the Vatican's recent conference on the acceptability of genetically modified crops for not including more priests who opposed their implementation. The conference was held in order to help the Vatican take an informed official position on the benefits or detriments of genetically modified crops. GM crops have been proposed as a solution for food scarcity in Africa, and have been aggressively promoted by "agribusiness" and by the US government. Opposition to the use of these crops cites the possible serious effects of modified crops on natural ecosystems, and on the health of those who consume them.
