1. What is digital publishing?

Digital publishing is the creation of digital or electronic documents through which original creative works and information are made available to an audience, however broad or narrow. Digital media include web-pages (HTML), portable digital documents (PDF), and eBooks, all of which may in turn include digital images.

A digital publisher provides authors or organizations with the service of creating such digital documents and may provide an array of means for delivering those documents to readers.

2. What are the benefits of digital publishing, and for whom?

Digital publishing is designed to provide convenience, immediacy, and mutual profit for both author and reader, visual artist and viewing public. Because the process is relatively inexpensive, and because it uses the Internet as a means of delivery, it serves as an expansion of access on the creative and commercial ends; i.e. the author/artist gains exposure (or access to a wider audience), and the literary or visual-art consumer gains variety (or access to a broader spectrum of original work).

Furthermore, by using digital editing software intelligently and creatively, Casavaria is able to produce dynamic reading and viewing experiences, within a single digital document. Web-pages, PDF files, and eBooks can be designed for easy navigation, broken-down by subject-matter, or linked directly to relevant locations on the World Wide Web. (Even though PDF files and eBooks are designed for easy viewing on your desktop, laptop or hand-held device, they can link you directly to the Internet, provided the same device is connected to the Internet.)

Another major benefit of Casavaria's digital publishing project is the cultural enrichment of the Web, of the experience of web-browsing, and of conducting online study and research. [ Top ^ ]

3. Can I publish in print, through Casavaria's process?

Yes! Casavaria offers options to print books on demand (as few as one at a time), or to order short run printings. Digital document rendering allows Casavaria to offer this service in conjunction with digital print service vendors.

4. How can a digital document be secured, to protect authors' intellectual property rights and prevent piracy?

There are various levels of security available when creating digital documents, and the choices depend on the needs and interests of the author or publisher of the document.

— Least Secure —

While web-based HTML pages are available to anyone who views them and can be copied, downloaded, saved, cached or printed and by these means redistributed, copyright law protects the works posted there. Secure domains can be created, where only paying subscribers would be able to view material viewed in secure web-pages, but all of the above capabilities would be available to paying viewers.

— More Secure —

PDF files have added security capabilities and can be formatted to prevent copying of text or printing of the file, but they can always be moved from one directory to another or from one machine to another. They can be sold online, by requiring payment for access to the downloadable file, but post-purchase sharing cannot be prevented.

— Most Secure —

E-Books, created from PDF files, allow the most stringent security. With eBooks, the publisher can prevent not only copying and printing, but also moving the file in any way, once it is downloaded. The secure eBook is published and downloaded through software designed to ensure this high level of security and can only be viewed through that software. If one wishes to allow some proliferation of the work, without requiring purchase, as a sort of free advertisement, eBooks allow the publisher to set permissions for 'lending' or 'giving' an eBook to another reader. The file can then be moved to another device, either permanently, or as a temporary copy which will expire after a set amount of time. [ Top ^ ]

5. What is Casavaria's policy regarding copyright?

All works published through Casavaria remain the exclusive intellectual property of their author, for whom all rights are reserved. If Casavaria is commissioned to produce a translation, the text of the translation will carry a shared copyright.

6. What is Casavaria Travel?

Casavaria's travel section (CavaTravel.com) is not a travel agency. No fares or bookings are offered by Casavaria, and no packages are being sold. Curious travelers can, however, find links to various travel-related information, booking and education services.

The travel pages are meant to house an ever-expanding reserve of literature, artwork, and information pertaining to travel. This reserve will include original literary inventions, classical literature, non-fiction narratives, political and historical essays, photographs, tourism information about certain featured cities, and links to sites that may assist in planning for or researching a trip.

The ultimate goal is to promote intercultural exchange, understanding and curiosity, and while doing so to provide a comprehensive database from which users can create customized guides by which to create enriched and unique travel experiences.

NOTE: You should research any service through which you plan to purchase a ticket or a travel-package, prior to purchase and/or departure. Casavaria has no direct editorial control over the content of linked sites, and is not responsible for the fares, packages, programs and/or services they may offer. [ Top ^ ]

7. What use does an unknown author have for translation services?

Some authors may be interested in expanding the potential audience for their work. Others may simply have created something not easily comprehended by the current literary trends in their own language, but which draws upon many of the techniques and innovations already common in the contemporary literary stylings of another language or culture. Translating all or part of an original work into that language could generate interest that would not otherwise emerge. [ Top ^ ]

8. What's the easiest way to navigate Casavaria.com?
